Broadchurch has a way of keeping the plot short and sweet, whilst also retaining its emotional impact. It doesn't simply move onto another muder case. Instead, it focuses on the realities of a police investigation, that it isn't over if the defendant pleads innocent, leading to an inquiry in which cracks in the conviction are found.
Like Rembrandt, whose paintings focus on events before or after a drama, Chibnall provides the emotional aftereffects of a long, drawn out trial for Danny Latimer (the murdered child)'s killer, whilst cleverly creating a sense of mystery by opening another can of worms from the past. DCI Hardy's unsolved case investigating two missing schoolgirls. This is a writer who searches for all possible dramatic avenues for his characters, and is rewarded with plots which make them all the more rich and engaging.
I would highly recommend this series, perhaps even better than the first.
